My Grandmother

On my Mother's side

Early Childhood

My Grandmother grew up in a very large joint family. They were kind, loving and caring people. In her family she lived with her Mum, Dad, two Brothers, Uncles, Aunties and her Grandmother.(On her Father's side). Altogether, there were 21 people in the family. She no longer lives in a joint family. They were always there for each other when they were younger, and this has continued her whole life. Whenever one is in need, they reach out and help them.

The impact of religon on her life

My Grandmother is one of the most religous people I know. She is Catholic. She is very active in her local parish. She lead Sunday school for the younger children, she prepared children for first holy communion and leads prayers in church. Religon had a very positive impact on her life. Her Grandmother was the head of the family. Every evening, she would gather the whole family to say the rosary together and she has taught my Grandmother many important values in life.

Her Hobbies

She enjoyed many hobbies. From an early age she has had a passion for reading, knitting, embroidery and cooking and this continues to be her hobbies. She embroidered a young girl reading a book in a garden. It is quite large and elegant. My Mother was 7 when she started stitching it and she only finished it when she was 10 years old. It took her a long time because she had to do it in her freetime when she wasn't working.

What I was surprised to learn about her

I was very surprised to learn that my Grandmother did Indian classical dancing for three months. Even my Mother was surprised to know that!

Her Earliest Memories

When she was very young, her Grandfather gifted her a scooter for her birthday. She was over joyed with the gift and she played with it alot down the roads near her house.

What she remembered about her Parents and Grandparents

My Grandmother's parents were very gentle and humble people. Her Father was a receptionist and her Mother was a housewife, but she learn't how to stitch from a taylor so she would stitch saris for some of her relatives and friends. They worked very hard to bring up their children. Her Mother’s parents were extraordinary loving and caring especially towards her and she was very fond of them. Every day she would come from school and have lunch with them. Her Dad’s Mother was very hardworking and a good cook. She was a loving person and kept the family together. She did the main cooking but the ladies in the family helped her.

What she thinks about how life has changed from when she was a child and now

My Grandmother came from a joint family, she doesn't see many large families today."Today's generation is leading a very fast life, they want everything at the press of a button, they are also very intelligent because of modernization but can get easily frustrated."
